Introduction

Prior to the confederation, most circulating small change in the American colonies were foreign coins and tokens. Post confederation, state coinage, tokens, and foreign pieces dominated until establishment of the US mint in 1792-93. The pre-1793 issues (and a few issued privately after that date) are considered "Colonials" and are avidly collected due to their historical connection to America's beginnings.
